Have you ever stood in front of a bulletin board for more than 60 seconds and gotten too overwhelmed to actually find anything that you wanted to go to? Or have you actually found what you were looking for only to forget about it by the time you got back to your dorm room? If you go to Wash U, my guess is that this has happened to you more than once.
Around campus most bulletin boards are congested with flyers covering a variety of campus activities. This familiar picture can be found in dorm staircases, floor bulletin boards, dining areas, and in almost every academic department. Messages are posted on top of one another and are lost in the sea of information.
Flyers are an inefficient method of communication in the WashU community. Flyers are expensive, time consuming, and often times the message does not reach the entire campus. Students, professors, and administrators all strive to connect with one another but fall short because there is no centralized venue for communication.
We have been thinking of a number of ways to eliminate these problems. One solution we came up with is encouraging the use of video flyers. Video flyers are short videos promoting events, meetings, or opportunities on campus. Similar to the Hip Hop Congress video or the WU/FUSED video, short messages can be used to explain your group’s purpose and promote your events in an accessible medium. This can often be more effective than flyering, while also being more sustainable and saving your group money. What do you think?
